It begins with materials that are easily accessible, household objects or mass-produced industrial products, used as components or roots of reference. Through processes of deconstruction, reconfiguration, and collage, these elements are assembled into a self-operating system. In recent practice, computer programming, temporal mechanisms, and sound reinforcement systems have frequently been employed, allowing these materials to coalesce into a self-exciting, generative, and organic whole.
These constructed organisms almost invariably emit sound, which cannot evade its surroundings in a non-ideal, non-vacuum environment, the ripples in the air or vibrations transmitted through solid matter inevitably reach every observer within the space. Sounds produced by material structures or generated autonomously through digital processes resemble stones of varying shapes and sizes cast into a lake. While humans often rely on light to perceive, experience, and document the time and space they inhabit, sound may constitute another dimension—an invasive, embodied mode of perception. The creation of such soundscapes, or alternative modes of sonic experience, remains an ongoing creative pursuit.
head head head Spending nearly two months facing this wooden box, a decision was ultimately made to abandon any form of irreversible structural intervention, allowing room for potential future iterations. While preserving its original outward appearance as much as possible, an internal organization was constructed instead. Through the movement of objects and the emergence of sound, a semi-enclosed inner space is formed, periodically exchanging information with the external environment.
Throughout the process, certain images repeatedly surfaced: places once lived in, Cantonese pop songs once heard, video games once played, forests, lakes, and seas passed on foot, countless cycles of day and night. It is as if, after a moment of disembodiment, one turns back to glimpse a half-open doorway, behind which a rocket stands, always poised for launch.
