Field recording, color video, wireless sound system, 48 minutes, prayer flags, fabric, electric fans, hollow brick
In mid August 2021, the artist undertook a residency in Garzê, Sichuan, within the Gyalrong Tibetan region, encircled by four mountain ranges revered as sacred. Living in a mountain village, he spent nearly every day hiking into the forests, measuring the fragile distance between humans and nature with his own footsteps, and faithfully recording the sound and scene he encountered. After 20 days of immersion and extensive fieldwork, he came to realize how precious these raw, unadorned sounds were, especially in the pandemic-stricken year of 2021.
Alongside sound, he also recorded video, treating both as parallel forms of composition. The images, framed vertically in 9:16 as if in portrait, regard the landscapes as human-like presences, inviting viewers into an intimate dialogue. Meanwhile, sound extended beyond the camera's gaze, offering a sonic field that reaches far past the edges of the screen.
The work was ultimately realized in Changsha, where the artist constructed an 8-meter-high, 35-square-meter viewing structure. White chiffon evoked the image of a "white Tibetan chorten," while a semicircular wall of hollow bricks and strings of colorful flags recreated the embodied memories of Garzê: each morning stepping outside to face towering mountains like immovable walls. The striking contrast between the smallness of the individual and the immensity of nature is another theme the artist sought to explore in constructing this installation.
Within the semi-enclosed space formed by fabric, flags, and hollow bricksy, visitors experienced a state of shelter. Fans concealed behind the wall directed air currents that set the flags and fabric into motion — an ephemeral gesture of memory and a quiet homage to the mountains.
